| Dorset's Regionally Important Geological Sites |
Updated on 14/03/2008 |
Identifying and conserving Dorset's Regionally Important Geological/Geomorphological Sites.
Those interested in the geology of Dorset are catered for by the Dorset Geologists' Association Group (DGAG) which holds regular meetings, workshops and fieldwork trips throughout the county. It also publishes a bi-monthly Newsletter to keep members up-to-date with geological matters of concern to Dorset.
DIGS Group is specifically concerned with the conservation of geological sites in the county and is made up largely of members of the DGAG with representatives from the Dorset Wildlife Trust (to whom we are affiliated), Dorset Environmental Records Centre, Dorset County Museum, English Nature, Dorset County Council and the District Councils. The group's initial task of identifying sites suitable for designation as RIGS is largely completed. Undertaken are site conservation visits in order to prepare them for visits by groups of geologists, students or school children. We are also engaged in the preparation of interpretation material for the "flagship"sites. A recent £25,000 LHI grant has enabled us to produce two sets of five walk leaflets related to our RIGS. These are available at £3.95 each from DWT, one covers walks in West Dorset and the other in Purbeck. We are currently working with Purbeck District Council on the Keystone Project bringing to the attention of the public the geology, landscape and stone industry of Purbeck. An educational resource is being prepared and walks and talks for the public are being organised.
