In late 2004 two local charities merged to form one organisation offering a seamless service in west, south and north Dorset We now have fifteen specialist nurses working in the community giving advice and support to patients mainly in their own homes, but also in the community hospitals and in nursing and residential homes. In addition there are 2 specialist nurses working in Dorset County Hospital.
Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester, has 18 in-patient beds. Its specialist medical and nursing teams offers specialist palliative care and symptom control to help meet the needs of patients and support for their families. In addition it offers respite care for patients suffering from progressive illnesses other than cancer, coupled with positive help for their carers.
Day Hospicecare is provided at both Joseph Weld Hospice and at Trimar Hospice in Weymouth offering patients nursing and medical support, companionship and the opportunity to enjoy new interests and social activities, whilst giving their carers at home a break. In addition Day Hospice care is now open in Sturminster Newton each Tuesday and it is planned to open further Day Hospices in west and north Dorset in the foreseeable future.There are also three social groups across the area.
All care is without any charge and despite a grant from the Primary Care Trust we need to raise in excess of £2 million every year in order to secure our service. The aims of the Woodland Trust are to preserve ancient woodland, to create new deciduous woodland, to ensure woodland exists for recreation near towns, to encourage wildlife and biodiversity, and to educate the public about woodland. Talks can be arranged locally throughout Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth, and also west Hampshire. on British woodland and the work of the Woodland Trust.
